HALMASPIEL digs up the family storage to recount the life of my mother, a former fashion designer in the German Democratic Republic (GDR). Pawns in a game, sewing patterns, autobiographical notes, court files as well as medical images and other animated found objects come together in this collage. They form a biography of the 20th century: Growing up in the Nazi era, teenage years in post-war Germany, the building of the wall and a life in the GDR as well as in a reunified Germany. It is a story of escape and conformism, of doubts and playing along.
